Happy New Year!

Welcome back to the library!
It is hard to believe we are almost a quarter of the way into our ‘new’ century…and nearly halfway through the 23-24 school year!

We’ve just wrapped up our first week back at school after the winter break, and it was as busy as ever. This past week in the library, we learned a new song about kindness–and how to sign it in American Sign Language too. ASL resources were shared as well–books in our collection on sign language, and handouts with the ASL alphabet.

We talked about the California Young Reader Medal award and read selections from this year’s nominees list–some student’s heard ‘Negative Cat’ by Sophie Blackall, and others heard ‘Chez Bob’ by Bob Shea. Between now and March, we will be reading each of the five nominees for primary grades together in the library. In March, our colts, along with K-12 students across the state, will vote for their favorite. Before the end of the year, we will learn which titles received the highest honors. All of the nominated books in the three elementary categories are available for check-out at the Dapplegray library.

We have a long weekend ahead, with Monday set aside as a day of service, in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. In the library, books on Dr. King’s life, work, and the history of the Civil Rights movement are featured in a special display, and students were encouraged to explore them. To hear Dr. King’s ‘I Have a Dream’ speech, paired with the book of Kadir Nelson’s beautiful illustrations, click here, to be taken to the Dapplegray Elementary website Library page commemorating the life of Dr. King, and scroll down about halfway.

The library remains a bustling hub of activity during the upper grade lunch period. Students gather to find new books, read, draw, use our Creation Station materials to make crafts, collaborate on studying and independent projects, and more. If you’d like to volunteer to help out during lunch between 12:15 and 1:15, sign up through Colts Connect!
